Resumen

SISS, Ahyas  y  ALMEIDA, Viviane da Silva. The power of whiteness and institutional racism: perceptions on access to brazilian diplomacy. Sér.-Estud. [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.50, pp.83-102.  Epub 07-Mayo-2019. ISSN 2318-1982.  https://doi.org/10.20435/serie-estudos.v24i50.1172.

The Rio Branco Institute (IRBr), the only official institution for training diplomats of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), has registered a sub-representation of Afro-Brazilians and Afro-Brazilians in their diplomatic career. In this sense, Oliveira (2011) postulates in his studies that, until 2010, only 0.07% of IRBr’s diplomats were Afro-Brazilian, as this proves this under-representation of members of this ethnic-racial group in that career. In this context, this article, as part of a wider research, sought to investigate the selection criteria for the position of diplomat, if such criteria are permeated by personal and institutional racism mediated by the updating of the eugenic agenda in Brazil, as well as the impressions that diplomats both Afro-Brazilians and whites who enter the IRBr have on the career. It is a phenomenological research, of qualitative analysis, in which methodological procedures were used, the bibliographic analysis, the documentary, semi-structured interview, open questionnaire and the Critical Discourse Analysis (ACD). The analysis is elucidated in diplomats’ impressions of the career, their conceptions of institutional racism, and the experiences that Afro-Brazilian diplomats have in entering diplomacy.

Palabras clave : racism; institutional racism; Afro-Brazilians.
