Universities have been in full transformation for years in order to respond to the changes that the labour market is undergoing. The main skill that individuals should have will be the ability to adapt to changes. Therefore, higher education institutions must train the competences proper to the age of knowledge. Blended learning is a model of teaching and learning that benefits of online and face-to-face modalities through the inclusion of technology, thus overcoming the limitations of time and space. Blended learning also involves using a variety of active learning methodologies. Active methodologies, together with the instrumental skills represented by the use of information and communication technologies, are the key for individuals to develop the skills required in the age of knowledge. The objective of this study is to present some of the existing models of blended learning and to describe the main elements that characterize it, for which a bibliographical research has been used. The results show that it consists of a combination of features of face-to-face and distance learning, enhanced by the use of technology. In addition, the variety of potential combinations allows great flexibility to adapt the model to the needs of each institution and its users.
