This paper presents a discussion about school education in the Guarani and Kaiowá Indigenous Reserves, based on historical documents produced in the context of the Indian Protection Service (SPI), consulted at the Antônio Brand Indigenous Documentation Center (CEDOC) (in the Center for Studies and Research of Indigenous Populations [NEPPI], at the Dom Bosco Catholic University [UCDB]) and in the virtual collection of the Indian Museum / FUNAI. The documents analyzed in this article are from the 5th SPI / I Regional Inspectorate. R. 5, referring to the south of Mato Grosso/State (now Mato Grosso do Sul/State), more specifically to the José Bonifácio Indigenous Post, in the municipality of Caarapó, in the territory of the Guarani and Kaiowá. The documentary analysis shows the assimilationist paradigm that guided the indigenist policy of the Brazilian State, presenting the regulating ideals for “the formation of the citizen as subject of right” and directing the objectives of the presence of the school education in the areas of coverage of the SPI, organ that acted between 1910 and 1967.
