FIGUEIREDO, Jakes Charles Andrade de  y  PANIAGO, Maria Cristina Lima. Prison education in a federal prison: the challenges of teachers facing this reality. Sér.-Estud. [online]. 2023, vol.28, n.63, pp.155-176.  Epub 21-Ago-2023. ISSN 2318-1982.  https://doi.org/10.20435/serieestudos.v28i63.1798.

This article is an excerpt from a doctoral research and aims to present some education policies for incarcerated individuals and discuss the challenges of educating within the prison system. We begin by problematizing the experience of being between bars and walls in prison, focusing on the incarcerated individuals. We will present some policies related to education in Brazilian prisons and the school as a space for resocialization. Finally, we discuss the challenges faced by teachers in contemporary times and the prison system, considering that understanding and valuing differences requires re-significations of knowledge, experiences, concepts, and practices for learning and teaching in contexts of open, vibrant, complex, and diverse curricula that emerge in Adult and Youth Education (EJA) and with incarcerated individuals. Teachers face many challenges in this educational work, such as reflecting on their practice constantly, valuing aspects of inclusion and autonomy, and forming themselves and others in spaces of exchange and dialogue. It is essential to consider that incarcerated individuals are also representatives and members of the society in which we are all inserted.

Palabras clave : incarcerated individuals; resocialization; teacher education.
