The article presents the results of a master’s degree research that focuses on the theme of the education of ethnic-racial relations and the teaching of Sociology in Basic Education. We seek to highlight the potential of school Sociology in terms of approaching concepts and theories that directly dialogue with the theme of the education of ethnic-racial relations, aligned with a problematizing education and in compliance with Law n. 10.639/03. We established a dialogue with Nilma Gomes (2017), who recognizes Law n. 10.639/03 as an important achievement, but which brings with it the need for consideration regarding its implementation; Petronilha Silva (2007), who draws attention to a lack of commitment to a plural vision of society based on a reading of curricular policies; and bell hooks (2013), who draws important contributions on the humanization of the school space. The research methodology consisted of collaborative critical action research, carried out in a peripheral public school in the city of Belo Horizonte. The results point to the potential of school Sociology in dealing with the education of ethnic-racial relations as a discipline that has broad possibilities for developing pedagogical proposals, based on strategies that provide space for the mobilization of knowledge constructed by the black population.
