Abstract

The present text aims to uncover the struggle for school education among residents of the Remnant Community of Quilombo Nossa Senhora Aparecida do Chumbo, located in the region of the municipality of Poconé, MT, between the years 1960 and 1980. Methodologically, the research is embedded in a qualitative approach, using ethnographic method and oral history, in dialogue with Denzin and Lincoln (2006), Geertz (2008), and Alberti (2013). The main data collection instruments were participant observation, semi-structured interviews, field notes, and interviews with three members of the quilombola community. During this period, despite the majority of Brazil’s population residing in rural areas, there were not enough public policies to address their overall needs, especially their educational needs. Despite the lack of official records, there were individuals who fought, individually, for access to education in the Chumbo Community. The accounts revealed that the protagonism of these individuals was crucial for the establishment of the community’s first school, as they perceived education as a means to achieve personal, social, and economic advancement.
