Abstract

NASCIMENTO, Luzia Aparecida do  and  BACKES, José Licínio. Zumbi dos Palmares Preparatory Course and the construction of black women’s identity. Sér.-Estud. [online]. 2024, vol.29, n.67, pp.237-255.  Epub Dec 12, 2024. ISSN 2318-1982.  https://doi.org/10.20435/serieestudos.v29i67.1988.

This article aims to show the importance of the Zumbi dos Palmares Preparatory Course for constructing the identity of black women. In order to achieve this aim, semi-structured interviews were carried out with five black women who attended the Course and graduated from higher education. A qualitative analysis was carried out based on authors from the field of Ethnic and Racial Studies. Firstly, the analysis is performed by considering the historical struggle of the black movement and, particularly, of black women against racism and in defense of the positive construction of black identity. Next, the results of the field research are presented. The analysis has shown that the Zumbi dos Palmares Preparatory Course contributed positively to the construction of the identity of the black women interviewed: some pointed out the contribution to the construction of a positive identity as a black woman in their family, and others strongly emphasized this construction enabled by the Course.
