The article analyzes the perspectives and values that guide the teaching in universities in a context of market tension. Methodologically, the research is developed together with regional community universities in Rio Grande do Sul, throughout documental analysis and interviews with twelve gestors and researchers. As results, we identify an institutional displacement towards the so-called academic capitalism in the new economy. However, such tendency coexists with a resistance posture towards the preservation of the values of higher education as a public good.
