The study presents a brief retrospective of Brazilian education in the economic context, pondering the educational transformations and reflection of some historical events on the current scenario of education. A parallel was drawn between the (re)construction of economic theories and their (un)concern in overcoming inequalities. The applicability and consequences of Constitutional Amendment 95/2016 (public spending) are questioned as a counterpoint to social demands, especially to education and the fulfillment of the goals set by the National Education Plan (PNE) 2014-2024.
