Abstract

This article presents the results of a research that sought to understand the challenges of the school principals in their first year of work in the Sao Paulo Education Secretary. This is a research with a qualitative approach whose data were obtained through interviews with a semi-structured script with principals of eight public schools in the state of Sao Paulo. The school principals’ testimonials were analyzed and interpreted in the perspective of content analysis from Laurence Bardin and the literature on the subject. The results show that there are personal, formative, and psychological challenges that are present, starting mainly from the bureaucratic issues that are attributed to the school principals in exercise. Because of this, the school principal often ends up by putting the school's pedagogical project in second place at the expense of aspects and demands of an administrative nature, as well as to attend the determinations coming from the São Paulo Education Department.
