The effectiveness of Distance Education (DE) in Brazil is not a new fact. Education in this modality has been solidifying over the years, and, through the Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education (LDBEN), Law 9.394 / 96 and Decree No. 5.622 / 2005 was regulated. Distance learning added to the advent of technologies and the interest in offering distance learning courses on the part of government agents has taken new directions and is increasingly occupying a prominent place in the national education scenario. Therefore, this research aimed to know and analyze the profile of students in the distance education modality at the Federal University of Pampa (UNIPAMPA), as well as their skills as autonomous beings in the teaching and learning processes. The methodology used to get to know this profile was the application of a questionnaire with structured and semi-structured questions in the 21 centers contemplated with courses implemented at a distance by the institution. The analysis of the collected and substantiated data with a bibliographic review that deals with this debate was carried out. In the end, it was found that most students still face problems related to their autonomy, since there is no support in the institution focused exclusively on this modality. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that the University will provide conditions for the student to have autonomy and be a critical and skilled student of their practices as an agent of knowledge.
