The objective of the research is to analyze the formation process of elementary school classrooms. The paper uses data from School Census and ‘Prova Brasil’ of municipal schools of Contagem-MG, considering gender, race, socioeconomic status, performance in Mathematics, and grade retention. The results show that the students who experienced grade retention, with low socioeconomic status and insufficient performance, were concentrated in specific classrooms, and grouping of students by certain characteristics was a school decision, although researches show the disadvantages of this form of organization.
