The autonomy principle has been at the center of discussion since the creation of the first universities. The tensions have been, in general, motivated by political disputes presented in the interior of the society and the State. The purpose of this article is to present the results of a study regarding autonomy in the Brazilian university tradition. The research showed, among other aspects, the strict correlation between democracy and autonomy.
