The article aims to analyze artifices and mechanisms for the upward migration of medians from the Basic Education Development Index in the organization of school work of a group of 29 state schools. Research carried out through analysis of indexes and interviews with the professionals. The results show that external tests encourage schools to produce pedagogical and managerial strategies to guarantee or improve performance. However, there are differences in the effects according to the indexes and results achieved by the schools involved in the research.
