The article enunciates reflections on the National Program of the Civic-Military Schools (PECIM) in the light of Paulo Freire’s conception of democratic management of education. In comparison with the scientific literature, the analysis showed that the program represents a setback in the field of educational policies because it constitutes a threat to the principle of democratic management of schools, injures pedagogical autonomy, expropriates spaces for teaching performance and processes of teaching and learning, as well as mischaracterize the public school as a space to be more, that is, as a locus of critical, liberating, inclusive and emancipatory human formation.
