Abstract

CABRITO, BELMIRO; CERDEIRA, LUÍSA  and  MUCHARREIRA, PEDRO RIBEIRO. Education and political cycles in Portugal – Which relationships? evidence from de last decades. Revista Brasileira de Política e Administração da Educação [online]. 2022, vol.38, n.1, e122619.  Epub Oct 02, 2023. ISSN 2447-4193.  https://doi.org/10.21573/vol38n002022.122619.

The role of higher education in development requires educational policies that impact individuals and society. In this article, the evolution of demand for higher education in the period 2000-2020 in Portugal is analyzed by paying attention to public policies conducted in different contexts: periods of economic growth and austerity; periods of center-right and center-left governance; to understand whether there is a link between the demand for higher education and the government’s political framework, accepting the hypothesis that demand varies depending on the political spectrum in which the government is located.

Keywords : higher education; public policies; political cycles; political and economic framework of governance.
