This theoretical essay aims to show how internationalization (academic and student) developed in Brazil between 2003 and 2020. Data collected through CAPES and CNPQ show that over the years there have been periods of growth and decline in supply grants and prioritization of specific areas. Evidence points to a clear “disengagement” on the part of recent governments about academic and student mobility. Certainly, the lack or bad application of public policies to promote internationalization in the medium and long term can be disastrous.
