Os dados foram coletados quando os sujeitos tinham 11, 15 e 18 anos e analisados por meio dos seguintes testes estat&#237;sticos: Qui-quadrado de Pearson (nas an&#225;lises brutas) e Regress&#227;o de Poisson (nas an&#225;lises multivariadas, ajustando para sexo, escolaridade materna e &#237;ndice de bens). O uso do computador esteve associado &#224; menor ocorr&#234;ncia de reprova&#231;&#227;o, em cada uma das idades, quando comparado ao n&#227;o uso, tanto nas an&#225;lises brutas quanto na maior parte das an&#225;lises multivariadas. Da mesma forma, o uso do computador em cada uma das idades resultou em menores taxas de reprova&#231;&#227;o nas idades posteriores. O estudo longitudinal permitiu considerar a temporalidade na an&#225;lise, identificando um poss&#237;vel per&#237;odo sens&#237;vel &#8211; at&#233; os 11 anos &#8211; em que o uso desse equipamento esteve associado &#224; menor reprova&#231;&#227;o, nessa e nas outras idades analisadas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract This paper explores the association between school failure and home computer use, among the 5.249 members of the longitudinal study &#8220;Cohorte de nacimiento Pelotas 1993&#8221;, being held in this Southern Brazilian city. Data were collected at ages 11, 15 and 18 and analyzed through the use of the following statistical tests: Chi-square (for the gross analyses) and Poisson Regression (for the multivariate analysis, adjusted for sex, maternal education and socioeconomic index). Computer use was associated with a lower incidence of failure in every age, when compared to no use, both in the gross and the multivariate analyses. Likewise, the use of computers at each age resulted in lower failure rates at later ages. The longitudinal study allowed us to consider temporality in the analyses, identifying a possible sensitive period &#8211; up to 11 years of age &#8211; in which the use of the equipment was associated with lower school failure, at that and at the other analyzed ages.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Se explora la asociaci&#243;n entre la reprobaci&#243;n escolar y el uso dom&#233;stico de computadoras entre los 5.249 miembros del estudio longitudinal &#8220;Cohorte de nacimiento Pelotas 1993&#8221;, que se lleva a cabo en esa ciudad de sur de Brasil. Los datos fueron recogidos a los 11, 15 y 18 a&#241;os y se analizaron mediante las siguientes pruebas estad&#237;sticas: Chi-cuadrado (para el an&#225;lisis bruto) y Regresi&#243;n de Poisson (para el an&#225;lisis multivariado, ajustando por sexo, educaci&#243;n materna e &#237;ndice de propiedad). El uso de computadoras se asoci&#243; con menor incidencia de fracaso en todas las &#233;pocas, en comparaci&#243;n con el no uso, tanto en el an&#225;lisis bruto, como en la mayor&#237;a de los an&#225;lisis multivariados. Del mismo modo, el uso de computadoras en cada edad result&#243; en tasas de reprobaci&#243;n inferiores en las edades posteriores.
