O artigo aponta que, assim como ocorreu nos séculos XII e XIII, os jesuítas combinaram a arte de escrever cartas com a de fazer discursos. Herdada da tradição retórica, a formalidade do discurso contido nas missivas jesuíticas dá-lhes credibilidade. Para verificar como se dava a arte da persuasão pela fala, o artigo faz uso de algumas cartas jesuíticas que demonstravam as técnicas usadas pelos inacianos para se aproximarem dos nativos da América portuguesa, a fim de que a pregação da doutrina fosse assimilada por eles. Por fim, o texto apresenta algumas missivas que determinaram os modos corretos de escrever no início da organização da Companhia de Jesus.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[This paper explains the relationship between rhetoric and the correct ways of speaking and writing, based on documents from the time when the Society of Jesus was founded. It shows that, as happened in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the Jesuits combined the art of writing letters and making speeches. Inherited from the rhetorical tradition, the formality of discourse contained in Jesuit letters lent them credibility. To investigate the art of persuasion through speech, this paper makes use of some Jesuit letters demonstrating the techniques used by the Jesuits to build relationships with Portuguese-speaking Latin Americans so the doctrine they preached was assimilated by them. Finally, the paper presents some letters that establish the correct ways to write in the early day of the Society of Jesus.]]></p></abstract>
