Foi realizada uma pesquisa exploratória interpretativa com 61 estudantes de licenciatura em química de quatro universidades federais brasileiras, investigando-se os sentidos produzidos com a leitura da biografia de Alice Ball no que tange às possibilidades para o debate de aspectos epistemológicos. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de questionário avaliado externamente por especialistas e testado internamente com um grupo de estudantes. Os aspectos práticos do trabalho científico foram mais percebidos na leitura em relação a outras características (ciência como produção coletiva, mutabilidade, influências do contexto sociocultural, estruturas sociais da ciência). A biografia demonstrou potencial para promover a história da biografada. Aspectos epistemológicos necessitam de problematização para maior compreensão da atividade científica por meio da biografia.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN: Este trabajo se centra en el papel de una biografía científica en la discusión de las características de la producción del conocimiento científico, incluidos aspectos de género y raza. Para ello, se llevó a cabo una investigación exploratoria interpretativa con 61 estudiantes de química de cuatro universidades públicas brasileñas, se investigando los sentidos producidos con la lectura de la biografía acerca del posibilidades para discutir aspectos epistemológicos. Los datos fueran obtenidos por médio de un instrumento validado externamente por especialistas y previamente probado con un grupo de estudiantes. Aspectos prácticos del trabajo científico fueron más percibidos en la lectura en relación con otras características (ciencia como producción colectiva, mutabilidad, influencias del contexto sociocultural, estructuras sociales). La biografía mostró el potencial para promover la historia de la cientista. Las cuestiones epistemológicas necessitan de discussión para fomentar una mejor comprensión de la actividad científica por medio de la biografia.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT: This work focuses on the role of a scientific biography in discussing characteristics of the construction of scientific knowledge, including the influence of social issues of gender and race. For this, an interpretative exploratory study was carried out with 61 undergraduate chemistry students from four Brazilian federal universities. It was investigated senses produced from the reading concerning the possibilities for debating epistemological aspects. The data were gathered by means of an instrument previously analyzed by two experts and previously tested with a group of students. The practical dimension of the scientific work was more recognized than other characteristics (science as a collective enterprise, changeable, sociocultural influences, social-institutional structure). The biography showed the potential to promote the scientist&#8217;s history. Epistemological questions need to be discussed to foster better understandings of the scientific activity by means of the biography.]]></p></abstract>
