</abstract>

However, the reconstruction of the concept of freedom in the history of philosophy shows that the negative and positive sides form two inseparable faces of the same coin, so Hobbes conceived a concept of freedom as a movement / non-impediment to support Cromwell’s republic, while Liberals, like Locke, thought of freedom as consent / non-arbitrariness and Republicans, like Machiavelli, engineered freedom as self-mastery / non-domination.
</abstract>
