Não há definições claras quanto ao padrão de desempenho que o professor deva apresentar para ser considerado competente e, conseqüentemente, não há convergência nos resultados das pesquisas. Além disso, os resultados são afetados pelo tipo de pesquisa (experimental ou correlacional e pela ênfase no processo ou no produto de ensino. A definição de algumas possíveis variáveis associadas à competência, tais como clareza, entusiasmo, apoio ao aluno, etc., surge como uma condição imprescindível para a geração de trabalhos realmente úteis nesse campo tão controvertido.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[The competency concept has been defying all research efforts some decades now. There is not a clear understanding as to the performance pattern the teacher has to reach in order to be considered as competent. Consequently there is no agreement among research findings. Additionally, the results in the themselves are affected by the kind of research (experimental or descriptive) undertaken and by the different emphasis on teaching products or process. The clear definition of some competency related variables, like clarity, enthusiasm, or rapport, seems to be a necessary condition to the development of more useful works in this so controversial field.]]></p></abstract>
