O objetivo foi caracterizar a comunicação da profissional com crianças e adolescentes, em sessões de consultório e em atividades educativas. Focalizando os diálogos estabelecidos nas diversas situações registradas, as análises buscaram configurar o lugar que a profissional ocupa nas interlocuções e as estratégias que ela emprega para os propósitos de atender e educar. Os achados sugerem que, nas instâncias de tratamento, sobretudo quando precisa obter cooperação, a comunicação da dentista mostra-se apropriada no tocante a vários aspectos da relação com seus pacientes especiais. Entretanto, nas atividades educativas, sua postura de escuta e sua disposição para conversar são reduzidas. Ela geralmente não abre espaço para as manifestações do interlocutor e tende a assumir o “comando” dos diálogos, centrando-se no informar (o que reflete uma visão do processo de ensino-aprendizagem como transmissão-recepção) e efetuando um direcionamento da interlocução a temas estritamente ligados à saúde bucal (o que limita as oportunidades de conhecer os pacientes-educandos e as significações que eles estão elaborando).]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[The present study investigates the work of a dentist in the context of an institution for special education. The objective was to characterize the communication of this professional during treatment sessions and educational activities with children and adolescents who have mental deficiency. By focusing on the dialogues established in various situations, we attempted to configure the place that the dentist occupies in the interlocutions and the strategies that he uses for the purposes of attending and educating. The findings suggest that, during the treatment, mainly when there is need to obtain cooperation, his communication is appropriated in regard to several aspects of the relationship with the special patient. However, during educational activities, his availability to listen to and to maintain a dialogue is limited. He generally does not allow the interlocutor to manifest himself, and tends to hold the “command” of the dialogues. His utterances are centered on informing (what reflects a view of the teaching-learning process as transmission-reception), restricting the interlocutions to themes directly linked to mouth health (what reduces the opportunities to improve his knowledge about the patients-learners and the meanings that they are elaborating).]]></p></abstract>
