Destaca-se, no texto, a relação existente entre a lógica da escola seriada e a prática de uma avaliação baseada na meritocracia e na classificação. A crítica apresentada dirige-se à problemática da não-reprovação que, ao contrário de promover a qualidade do ensino a partir da ampliação de tempo e espaço para a aprendizagem dos alunos, pode tornar-se meramente o adiamento da sua exclusão]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract This paper presents some theoretical reflections on assessment, discussing the need for changing the meaning of assessment in schools organized in cycles. It develops the relationship between the logic of the graded school and the practice of student assessment based on meritocracy and classification. It presents a criticism of non-retention practices which, instead of promoting teaching quality through increasing time and space for students’ learning, can only postpone student exclusion]]></p></abstract>
