Nesse romance hist&#243;rico o autor discute, particularmente, duas concep&#231;&#245;es em conflito entre os revolucion&#225;rios franceses, representadas pela espada e pelo machado, sobre o tipo de rep&#250;blica a implantar e a possibilidade de igualdade do campon&#234;s, da mulher e da crian&#231;a em rela&#231;&#227;o, respectivamente, ao citadino, ao homem e ao adulto. Quanto ao destino da crian&#231;a ganham relevo, no romance, as duas utopias revolucion&#225;rias em disputa: a caserna obrigat&#243;ria e a escola obrigat&#243;ria.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[This article discusses the relationship between equality and difference in the Ninety-three Victor Hugo's novel, which deals with the War in the Vend&#233;e (1793), i.e. the counter-revolution for the restoration of the monarchy in France. In this historical novel the author discusses two conflicting views among the French revolutionaries, represented by the sword and the axe, about the kind of Republic to be implanted and the possibility of equality of the peasant, the woman and the child in relation to the city dweller, the man and the adult. As far as the fate of the child is concerned, the novel highlights two revolutionary utopias in dispute, viz. compulsory military service and compulsory school education.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Este trabajo trata de la relaci&#243;n entre igualdad y diferencia en la novela Noventa y tres de V&#237;ctor Hugo, versando sobre la guerra de la Vend&#233;e (1793) - la contrarrevoluci&#243;n por la restauraci&#243;n de la monarqu&#237;a en Francia. En esta novela hist&#243;rica, el autor discute, en particular, dos concepciones en conflicto entre los propios revolucionarios, representadas por la espada y por el hacha, respecto al tipo de rep&#250;blica a implantar y respecto a la posibilidad de igualdad del campesino, de la mujer y del ni&#241;o en relaci&#243;n, respectivamente, con el ciudadano, con el hombre y con el adulto. En lo que ata&#241;e al destino del ni&#241;o, ganan protagonismo en la novela las dos utop&#237;as revolucionarias en disputa: el cuartel obligatorio y la escuela obligatoria.]]></p></abstract>

Dans ce roman historique l'auteur discute particuli&#232;remente deux conceptions en conflict entre les revolutionaires fran&#231;ais, repr&#233;rent&#233;es par l'&#233;p&#233;e e le hache, sur le type de r&#233;publique &#224; implanter e la possibilit&#233; d'&#233;galit&#233; du paysan, de la femme e de l'enfant par rapport au citoyen, &#224; l'homme e &#224; l'adult.
