Iniciando por uma discussão metodológica sobre fontes geradoras de estatísticas educacionais e indicadores de escolaridade, o texto prossegue avaliando a cobertura/demanda para este grau de ensino, articulando-a com a política educacional brasileira (evidenciada pela expansão da matrícula e alocação de recursos aos diferentes níveis de ensino) e características da clientela (dando ênfase à sua origem sócio-econômica, condição de ocupação e à crescente participação feminina).]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[The article describes and analyzes present situation and the evolution of secondary teaching (senior high school) in Brazil, through published educational statistics and official budget informations. A methodological discussion on the sources of educational data and of schooling indicators precedes the evaluation of scope/demand for that level of schooling, associated to Brazilian educational policy (assessed through expansion of enrollment and allocation of resources among the different levels of teaching) and to the characteristics of students (with emphasis to socio-economic origin, occupational condition and to the increasing feminine participation).]]></p></abstract>
