Na primeira seção, destacamos aspectos históricos das práticas sociais na constituição da estatística como saber do Estado. Na segunda seção, mostramos como, na governamentalidade neoliberal contemporânea, a estatística torna-se uma tecnologia de governo para gerenciar áreas de risco social. Para isso, analisamos um programa de redução do analfabetismo no Brasil, mostrando, por um lado, os usos que o programa faz do saber estatístico para a gestão do risco social; por outro, como os números operam para tornar o programa auditável, ou seja, para manter sua credibilidade na aferição do investimento financeiro na diminuição do analfabetismo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[This article aims at analyzing the relationship between statistical knowledge and governmentality. In the first section, we have highlighted historical aspects of social practices in the constitution of statistics as a State knowledge. In the second section, we have shown how statistics has become a governing technology in the contemporary neo-liberal governmentality to manage areas of social risk. We have analyzed a program intended to reduce illiteracy in Brazil, showing, on the one hand, the uses of statistics knowledge in the program for managing the social risk, and, on the other hand, how numbers have operated to make the program auditable, that is, to keep its credibility when assessing the financial investment by means of the reduction in illiteracy.]]></p></abstract>
