<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
For their formation children need art. Poetry contains characteristics which help in the constitution and humanization of children - sensitive to the beauty of the aesthetic world and to the cultural and social sphere to which they belong. So poetry is open to childhood and close to those who are discovering the world, words, and sounds. Through reading or listening to poems, children can expand the horizons of their knowledge, because poetry dialogues with the child reader and helps in the educational process. This paper is part of a larger study on education through the poetic text and reflects on how this language can build knowledge and help in the child's formation. This reflection is based on the works of theoreticians in the field of education and literature, such as Dewey (1980), Freire (1996), Candido (1995), Paz (1982), Pound (1990), Paviani (1996) and Ramos (2010). With these foundations and the principles presented by Antonio Candido (2008) as a starting point, the poem "Pausa" by Mario Quintana (2005) is analyzed with a view to discuss its potential for humanizing the reader.
</abstract>
