Apesar dessa convivência, os problemas enfrentados no ensino de ambas as disciplinas são tratados freqüentemente de forma independente, não possibilitando qualquer ação conjunta. O artigo trata da necessidade de uma aproximação maior entre as duas disciplinas, tendo por base o paralelismo nas funções que ambas desempenham - ou deveriam desempenhar - na formação geral dos indivíduos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Mathematics and mother tongue are disciplines always present in school curricula. In spite this companionship, problems confronted in teaching both disciplines are often discussed in independent ways, making difficult any united educational action. The article deals with the need of a grater approach in teaching both disciplines, supported by the parallelism in the functions they play a part - or, at least would play - in general formation of a person.]]></p></abstract>
