Neste artigo, as ideias de crianças e jovens são examinadas sob um enquadramento teórico que procede à destrinça de conceitos essenciais à natureza da História, rebatendo-se a ideia comum de que ‘os jovens não sabem nada’. As implicações dos resultados desta investigação para o Ensino da História são aqui discutidas no contexto das exigências da sociedade de conhecimento actual.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[The historic thinking of Portuguese youth has been the object of intensive analysis in various studies that are part of a line of research in contextualized cognition that were realized by Dickinson & Lee (1978, 1984), Booth (1978) and Shemilt (1980, 1984). In this article, the ideas of children and youth are examined within a theoretical framework that untangles the essential concepts of the nature of History. The article questions the common idea that “young people know nothing.” The implications of the results of this investigation for History Education are discussed in the context of the demands of the current society of knowledge.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[El pensamiento histórico de los jóvenes portugueses ha sido objeto de análisis intensivas en estudios diversos que se incluyen en una línea de investigación en cognición contextualizada y que se ha desarrollado con los trabajos de Dickinson & Lee (1978, 1984), Booth (1978) y Shemilt (1980, 1984). En este artículo son analizadas las ideas de niños y jóvenes a partir de una perspectiva teórica que procura descifrar los conceptos esenciales a la naturaleza de la Historia, como también, refutar la idea común de que «los jóvenes no saben nada». Las implicaciones de los resultados de esta investigación para la Enseñanza de la Historia se discuten en el contexto de las exigencias de la actual sociedad de conocimiento.]]></p></abstract>
