By studying peritexts as well as the themes of the picturebooks, this text proposes an individual analysis of each volume as well as a comparative one, underlining the coherence of the collection. Authored by some of the most important contemporary Portuguese illustrators, several of the six volumes analysed received national and international awards. They also reflect the quality and the vitality of contemporary children and young adult‟s literature in Portugal. As they are wordless picturebooks, these volumes depend exclusively on peritextual and visual elements to tell a story. In the case of the books in analysis, the images totally replace the words, and the printed text is completely absent from the book, since the title and credits are also handwritten by the authors, becoming part of the illustrations. Visual and graphic aspects of these wordless picturebooks are there crucial for the reading process and they will be studied and analysed.
</abstract>
