É mostrado que o conceito nasceu a partir das reflexões sobre a reforma do ensino de Matemática e de Ciências nas décadas de 60, 70 e 80 do século XX, nos Estados Unidos e na Europa, e difundiu-se nos anos 80 e 90 do mesmo século enquanto componente educacional do movimento liberal de modernização e globalização, em um ambiente de intensa concorrência econômica, que mobiliza a Matemática e a Ciência como instrumentos de riqueza e poder. Levando em conta a ambiguidade do conceito, o artigo aponta para alguns problemas a serem enfrentados quando se tenta usar esse conceito.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The article presents the interest in the concept of &#8220;quality of education&#8221; and its international context. It shows that the concept was born from reflections on the reform of Mathematics and Sciences teaching in the 60s, 70s and 80s of the 20th century, in the United States and Europe, and it spread in the 80s and 90s of the same century as the educational component of the liberal movement of modernization and globalization, in an environment of intense economic competition, which mobilizes Mathematics and Science as instruments of wealth and power. Taking into account the ambiguity of the concept, the article points to some problems to be faced when trying to use this concept.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="fr"><p><![CDATA[RÉSUMÉ L&#8217;article s&#8217;intéresse à la naissance du concept de « qualité de l&#8217;éducation » et à son contexte international. Il montre que le concept est né de réflexions sur la réforme de l&#8217;enseignement des Mathématiques et des Sciences dans les années 60, 70 et 80 du XXe siècle, aux États-Unis et en Europe, et s&#8217;est propagé dans les années 80 et 90 du même siècle comme composante éducative du mouvement libéral de modernisation et de mondialisation, dans un environnement de compétition économique intense, mobilisant les Mathématiques et les Sciences comme instruments de richesse et de pouvoir. Prenant en considération l&#8217;ambiguïté du concept, l&#8217;article met en évidence certains problèmes auxquels il faut faire face lorsqu&#8217;on essaie de l&#8217;utiliser.]]></p></abstract>
