</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
This text is about religious distance education via booklets known as cordel (string) literature realized by the Catholic Church to promote its religious principles. They were used to indoctrinate social groups in the Northeast, during the first two decades of the twentieth century. The leaflets with “trezenas”(three days prayer), novenas, blessed, crafts, litanies and prayers to various saints were encountered in the Collection of Aderaldo Jose Castelo, from the Institute of Brazilian Studies at the University of Sao Paolo (USP). Having note the imperative language and the life of the saints narrated in the second person of plural, we realized that these texts were written by priests and monsignors bishops, who wrote in verse and prose about the Catholic Church for the reading and listening of others. Why did the Catholic Church use these booklets to disseminate its doctrine? To whom was intended the productions of the leaflets? How do these aspects and fragments of this cultural and religious tradition were incorporated as religious practices? How did the poets and printers produce leaflets developing stories, prayers and religious practices that remained in the memory and imagination of groups guided by traditions of orality and writing? Those are challenging and complex issues that allow reflection and analysis about how groups selectively incorporated writing and speaking in the permanent constitution / reconstitution of religious cultures.
</abstract>
