Dois experimentos avaliaram o grau de desenvolvimento da memória de trabalho e a natureza do ensaio subjacente à consolidação de informação. Participou do estudo um paralisado cerebral espástico-atetóide não-vocal e não-alfabetizado de 15a3m de idade, e usuário de sistema de comunicação computadorizado havia dois anos. O Experimento 1 usou urna variante do procedimento de recordação livre, em que após ouvir cada série de palavras, o sujeito selecionava, via tela sensível no monitor de seu sistema, as figuras cujos nomes eram falados pelo examinador. Foi obtida uma curva de posição serial típica, com acerto superior nos tens iniciais (primazia) e finais (recência). O Experimento 2 analisou a natureza do ensaio, se aberto ou encoberto e se visual ou subvocal. O anteparo anulou a primazia e acentuou a recência; e na sua ausência, a primazia foi tão forte quanto a regência. A inabilidade em fazer ensaio encoberto (visou-espacial ou subvocal) confirma expectativas teóricas para não-alfabetizados, e coloca desafios para o educador.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Working memory is responsible for retaining information during the processing involved in problem-solving. Two experiments assessed the degree of working memory development and the nature of the rehearsal underlying consolidation. An illiterate, non-vocal 15y3m old cerebral-palsied boy, who had used a computerized alternative communication system for two years, participated. Experiment 1 used a variation of the free-recalI procedure in which after listening to each of several word-series, the subject selected from the system monitor, via touch-screen, the pictures corresponding to the names spoken by the examiner. A typical serial-position curve resulted, with primacy and recency effects. Experiment 2 analyzed the nature of the rehearsal, whether overt or covert, and whether visual or subvocal. The procedure was replicated but the monitor was shaded in half of the trials. Shading suppressed primacy and highlighted recency whereas, in the absence of shading, primacy was as strong as recency. The inability to perform covered rehearsal (both visuo-statial and subvocal) is in accordance with the literature, and poses problems for the educator.]]></p></abstract>
