Its occurrence encompasses public and private institutions around the world. The loss of students represents the idleness of human and material resources in higher education institutions, while its causes are multiple. This article aims to explain dropout in higher education based on bibliographical research on the models developed by Vincent Tinto. More specifically, we sought to describe the variables that favor the occurrence of dropout, demonstrate the potentialities and limitations of the Student Integration Theory and compare it with the motivation and persistence/dropout model produced by this author. Methodologically, this is a qualitative study, considered as an exploratory and bibliographical research. Its corpus included classic and contemporary texts, relating their differences and similarities on the topic of dropout. The results show the changes undergone by the SIT and the change in the focus given by Tinto in his latest research; whose emphasis has shifted to students instead of institutions. This implied a greater focus on the social relationships built between individuals in the different spaces they frequent at the university.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo A evasão é um problema de caráter universal. Sua ocorrência abrange instituições públicas e privadas ao redor do mundo. A perda de estudantes representa a ociosidade de recursos humanos e materiais às instituições de ensino superior, enquanto suas causas são múltiplas. Este artigo objetiva explicar a evasão no ensino superior a partir de uma pesquisa bibliográfica sobre os modelos elaborados por Vincent Tinto. Mais especificamente, buscou-se descrever as variáveis que favorecem a ocorrência da evasão, demonstrar as potencialidades e limitações da Teoria de Integração do Estudante e compará-la com o modelo de motivação e persistência/evasão produzido por esse autor. Metodologicamente, este é um estudo qualitativo, considerado como uma pesquisa exploratória e bibliográfica. Seu corpus contou com textos clássicos e contemporâneos, relacionando suas divergências e similaridades sobre a temática da evasão. Os resultados mostram as mudanças sofridas na TIE e a alteração do foco dado por Tinto em suas últimas pesquisas; cuja ênfase passou a ser os estudantes ao invés das instituições. Isso implicou num foco maior nas relações sociais construídas entre os sujeitos nos diferentes espaços que frequentam na universidade.]]></p></abstract>
