Foi realizada análise de conteúdo da legislação em vigor e uma discussão sobre as especificidades da educação a distância. Foi feito também um levantamento de informações sobre essa modalidade no Censo da Educação Superior. Os principais achados da investigação são que essa modalidade de oferta educacional é considerada pelo legislador como um instrumento que pode ser utilizado para políticas de formação de professores. Além disso, foi possível constatar empiricamente que, de fato, a modalidade tem sido recorrentemente utilizada nos últimos anos, com destaque para o nível superior. No entanto, a educação a distância, a despeito das suas potencialidades, também apresenta limites para o cumprimento efetivo das metas nacionais para a formação docente.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The object of reflection of this article is the possibilities of using distance education as an instrument to achieving the goals and strategies of the National Education Plan (2014-2024) concerning the teachers training. An analysis of the current legislation contents and a discussion on the distance education specifics were carried out. A survey of information on this modality was also conducted in the Higher Education Census. The main findings of the research are that this educational modality provision is considered by the legislator as an instrument that can be used for teacher training policies. In addition, it was possible to empirically verify that, in fact, the modality has been recurrently used in recent years, with emphasis on the higher level. However, despite its potential, distance education also has limits for the effective achievement of national education targets.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen El objeto de reflexión de este artículo son las posibilidades de utilizar la educación a distancia como instrumento para alcanzar los objetivos y estrategias del Plan Nacional de Educación (2014-2024) en materia de formación docente. Se realizó un análisis de los contenidos de la legislación vigente y una discusión sobre las especificidades de la educación a distancia. También se realizó una recopilación de información sobre esta modalidad en el Censo de Educación Superior. Los principales hallazgos de la investigación son que esta modalidad educativa es considerada por el legislador como un instrumento que puede ser utilizado para las políticas de formación docente. Además, fue posible verificar empíricamente que, de hecho, la modalidad ha sido utilizada de manera recurrente en los últimos años, con énfasis en el nivel superior. Sin embargo, a pesar de su potencial, la educación a distancia también tiene límites para el logro efectivo de las metas educativas nacionales.]]></p></abstract>
