Por meio de uma pesquisa documental foram analisados prefácios, capas, folhas de rosto, sumários e introduções de nove livros didáticos, verificando as intenções reveladas pelo autor, as aplicações realizadas e as relações sociais envolvidas no contexto. Quatro situações emergiram e marcaram fortemente a trajetória da disciplina escolar História Natural/Biologia: 1) na década de 1930, houve uma influência dos movimentos da Escola Nova e da Rede de Sociabilidade de Valdemar de Oliveira para a manutenção e valorização da História Natural como disciplina escolar; 2) na década de 1940, a disciplina sofreu uma instabilidade com a mudança de seu nome e alterações na seleção dos conteúdos; 3) na década de 1950, a definição do currículo mínimo e a formação de Valdemar de Oliveira valorizaram os conteúdos de Higiene; 4) na década de 1960, com a LDB flexibilizando os conteúdos, a disciplina escolar Biologia foi tratada como História Natural, até ser suplantada pelo projeto estadunidense BSCS.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The objective of this work was to understand the materiality of the Natural History/ Biology textbooks by Valdemar de Oliveira published between the 1930s and 1960s. Through documentary research, cover sheets, title pages, prefaces, summaries and introductions of nine textbooks were analyzed to verify the intentions revealed by the author, the applications produced and the social interactions involved in the context. Four situations emerged and strongly marked the trajectory of the Natural History/Biology school subject: 1) In the 1930s, there was an influence of the New School movement and the Sociability Network of Valdemar de Oliveira for the maintenance and valorization of Natural History as a school subject; 2) In the 1940s, instability marked the subject with the change of its name and adjustments in the selection of contents; 3) In the 1950s, the definition of the minimum curriculum and the expertise of Valdemar de Oliveira led to a valorization of the Hygiene content; 4) In the 1960s, the Guidelines of the Brazilian Education System Law (LDB) brought more flexibility to the contents, and the school subject Biology was named as Natural History until replaced by the American project BSCS.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen El objetivo de este trabajo consistió en la comprensión acerca de la materialidad de los libros didácticos de Historia Natural/Biología de autoría de Valdemar de Oliveira publicados entre las décadas de 1930 y 1960. Por intermedio de una investigación documental, fueron analizadas tapas, portadas, prefacios, sumarios e introducciones de nueve libros didácticos, para la comprobación referente a las intenciones reveladas por el autor, además de las aplicaciones realizadas y las relaciones sociales involucradas en el contexto. Cuatro situaciones surgieron y marcaron enérgicamente la trayectoria de la disciplina escolar Historia Natural/Biología: 1) En la década de 1930, hubo una influencia de los movimientos respectivos a la Escola Nova y a la Rede de Sociabilidade de Valdemar de Oliveira para la manutención y valoración de la Historia Natural como disciplina escolar; 2) En la década de 1940, la disciplina sufrió una inestabilidad con la modificación de su nombre y alteraciones en la selección de los contenidos; 3) En la década de 1950, la definición del currículo mínimo y la capacitación de Valdemar de Oliveira valoraron los contenidos de Higiene; 4) En la década de 1960, con la maleabilidad respectiva a los contenidos, propuesta por la LDB, la disciplina escolar Biología fue entendida como Historia Natural hasta el momento de ser suplantada por el proyecto estadunidense BSCS.]]></p></abstract>
