Enfoca, especialmente no s&#233;culo XIX, exemplos de escravos e libertos que aprenderam a ler, escrever e contar, alguns chegando ao ensino superior e tornando-se docentes, expressando suas ideias pela imprensa. Para falar sobre esse tema, precisamos ter em mente que ser escravo, j&#225; definia a condi&#231;&#227;o de exclus&#227;o social e, portanto, educacional. Mesmo havendo reduzidos espa&#231;os de liberdade, esses n&#227;o foram suficientes para uma emancipa&#231;&#227;o social. A escravid&#227;o, muito mais que um sistema econ&#244;mico, foi um processo de educa&#231;&#227;o pelo medo, que disciplinou condutas, definiu hierarquias sociais, forjou sentimentos e valores. Essa &#233; uma hist&#243;ria de exclus&#227;o, de desigualdades sociais, de discrimina&#231;&#227;o e subtra&#231;&#227;o da cidadania, que se reflete ainda no s&#233;culo XXI.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The present text analyzes various signs of strategies and devices that involved the instruction/schooling of slaves and freedmen during the Colonial and Imperial periods (1500-1889). It focuses especially on the 19th century with examples of slaves and freedmen who learned to read, write and count. Some of them even attained higher education and became teachers, expressing their ideas through the press. In order to discuss education of the slaves in Brazil, we must bear in mind that being a slave already defined the condition of social and therefore educational exclusion. Even if there were small spaces of freedom, they were not enough for social emancipation. Slavery, much more than an economic system was a process of education through fear, which disciplined forms of conduct, defined social hierarchies, forged feelings and values. This is a history of exclusion, of social inequalities, of discrimination and deprival of citizenship, which is still reflected in the 21st Century.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="fr"><p><![CDATA[R&#233;sum&#233; Ce document analyse plusieurs indications des strat&#233;gies et des dispositifs impliquant l'instruction/scolarisation des esclaves et des noirs livres, de la p&#233;riode coloniale et imp&#233;riale (1500-1889). Met l'accent, en particulier dans les dix-neuvi&#232;me si&#232;cle, des exemples des esclaves et des livres qui ont appris &#224; lire, &#233;crire et compter, certains venant &#224; l'enseignement sup&#233;rieur et de devenir enseignants, exprimer leurs id&#233;es dans la presse. Pour parler de l'&#233;ducation des esclaves au Br&#233;sil, nous devons garder &#224; l'esprit que d'&#234;tre un esclave, d&#233;j&#224; d&#233;fini la condition de l'exclusion sociale et donc de l'&#233;ducation. M&#234;me si il ya des petits espaces de libert&#233;, cela ne suffisait pas pour l'&#233;mancipation sociale. <abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Este art&#237;culo analiza las estrategias y dispositivos vinculados a la ense&#241;anza/educaci&#243;n de los esclavos y libertos, durante los periodos colonial e imperial de Brasil (1500-1889). Est&#225; centrado, sobre todo, en el siglo XIX, con ejemplos de los esclavos y libertos que aprendieron a leer, escribir y contar, algunos de los cuales llegaron a la educaci&#243;n superior y se convirtieron en maestros, expresando sus ideas en la prensa. Para hablar de la educaci&#243;n de los esclavos en Brasil, tenemos que tener en cuenta que ser un esclavo, ya implica la condici&#243;n de exclusi&#243;n social y, por lo tanto, educativa. A pesar de que hay peque&#241;os espacios de libertad, estos no fueron suficientes para la emancipaci&#243;n social. La esclavitud, mucho m&#225;s que un sistema econ&#243;mico, fue un proceso de educaci&#243;n por el miedo, que regul&#243; la conducta, las jerarqu&#237;as sociales definidas, estableciendo sentimientos y valores falsos. Esta es una historia de exclusi&#243;n, desigualdades sociales, discriminaci&#243;n y secuestro de la ciudadan&#237;a, que tambi&#233;n se refleja en pleno siglo XXI.]]></p></abstract>
