</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
The approval of Law 10639/2003, which granted compulsory teaching of Afro-Brazilian and African culture and history in basic education, requires a rethinking of pedagogical actions in schools and in the curriculum. The purpose of this law is to combat the under-representation and stereotyping experienced by black people throughout Brazilian history. Its effectiveness in the classroom requires training a new profile of teachers and students, so that in the process of reflection on the “I” and “other”, they have the knowledge needed to question the pedagogy of exclusion that still exists in schools. This work discusses the possibility of teachers working with the teaching of Afro-Brazilian and African history and culture in school education. To see how the representation of other people, in this case black people, are manifested in schools, we conducted a participatory action-research offering an extension course aimed at teachers of State schools in the city of Maringa, PR, and surrounding region. We noted that the considerations made on the course led the teachers to question their concepts of race, ethnicity, gender, difference, culture and knowledge. The analysis of the data obtained indicated that the discussions helped to increase the teachers’ knowledge of their teaching practice as trainers of social positions. The teachers had the opportunity to rethink their subjectivity, personal attitudes, and historically assumed prejudices. We conclude that the course enabled a collective experience: to address conflicting issues and tensions surrounding ethnic and race relations in the classroom, we observed a need for teacher training to enable the teachers to deconstruct concepts and stereotypes of African and Black Brazilians constructed throughout history.
</abstract>
