</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
The article analyses the concepts of “optimism” and “pessimism” in the occidental thinking history from a Nietzschian perspective. It describes the “tragic way of being”, associated to “pessimism”, and the “rational way of being”, with optimistic traits. Nietzsche and Marx are respectively considered examples of the “pessimistic way” and the “optimistic way”. Moreover, the article analyses the cultural process of transition from one to another way of being. The author mainly used the concept of resentment in order to characterize the inversion of values, especially the educational values, responsible for the emergence of the pedagogical optimism, which leads to conceptions and teaching practices that are compliant, permissive and superficial. In addition the article suggests that this pedagogical optimism forged what is called “Pedagogy of Resentment” and, finally, points out the pedagogical pessimism as an antidote and a strategy to overcome this “pedagogy”.
</abstract>
