A partir de las configuraciones del campo de la educación superior y de los debates de la Cátedra Unesco Universidad e Integración Regional, este artículo analiza temas emergentes en América Latina, con énfasis en las realidades nacionales de Argentina, México y Brasil. Con enfoque ensayístico, discute los temas relevantes para los tres países y señala los desafíos para el debate político y la investigación académica en la tercera década del milenio. La metodología utilizada para la discusión del ensayo incluyó una revisión de la literatura y el tratamiento de casos nacionales. La literatura y los estudios indican que la educación superior es un campo emergente en la región, con importantes avances que resultan de la interlocución de esfuerzos académicos y políticos. Mientras la noción de educación superior como derecho gana fuerza en Argentina, México busca la universalización de la educación superior ante un contexto de desigualdades y, en Brasil, conviven preocupaciones con la autonomía universitaria y barreras para la ampliación del acceso a la educación superior. Las reflexiones son variadas e indican un campo fértil para la investigación, el debate político y las políticas públicas en educación superior en América Latina.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Higher education and university are themes of wide interest around the world and gather efforts from multiple agents and disciplines. Based on the configurations of the field of higher education and the debates of the UNESCO Chair Universidad e Integración Regional, this article analyzes emerging themes in Latin America, with an emphasis on the national realities of Argentina, Mexico and Brazil. Through an essay approach, it discusses the most relevant themes for these countries and points out the challenges for political debate and academic research in the third decade of the millennium. The discussion is developed through a methodology that includes a literature review and the analysis of national cases. The literature review and studies indicate that higher education is an emerging field in the region, with important advances resulting from the interlocution of academic and political efforts. While the notion of higher education as a right gains strength in Argentina, Mexico seeks the universalization of higher education in the face of a context of inequality ; and, in Brazil, concerns with university autonomy coexist with barriers to expanding access to higher education. The reflections indicate a fertile field for research, political debate and public policies in higher education in Latin America.]]></p></abstract>
