O que se discute, em particular, são as razões que determinam, no decurso da primeira grande experiência de descentralização do ensino em Portugal (1881-1892), a identificação da política educativa do município de Lisboa com a nova organização administrativo-pedagógica. Um traço marcante é o de que a escola graduada responde com extrema eficácia ao desígnio de escolarizar um elevado número de crianças. Por outro lado, o autor associa o novo modelo de organização escolar à ascensão de um corpo docente qualificado, indispensável para o entendimento da escola graduada enquanto comunidade orgânica; credita, no fundo, à ideia de especialização, algo que tem que ver com o desenvolvimento científico da pedagogia e com a transação do saber pedagógico no seio de uma comunidade de “especialistas”.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[This article seeks to register the political visibility of the graded school on a popular education project frame born under the aegis of masons republicans. What is being discussed, in particular, are the reasons which determined, during the first great experience of decentralization of education in Portugal (1881-1892), the identification of educational policy in the city of Lisbon with the new administrative and pedagogical organization. A strong feature in the graded school is that of the capacity of giving an effective answer concerning the education of a large number of children. Moreover, the author associates the new model of school organization to the rise of a qualified teacher’s class, which is essential for understanding the graded school as an organic community; that credits, basically, the idea of specialization, something that has to do with the scientific development of pedagogy and the pedagogical knowledge shared within a community of experts.]]></p></abstract>
