Abstract

The extension of schooling, the increasing of enrollment and the growing public expenses with education has intensified the preoccupation with school and its effectiveness. This paper indicates some aspects under which school has been evaluated. It identifies two streams of thought among authors from diverse academic origins: one, of those who look at school as an agent of socialization, and would like it more effective; another, of those who, apparently believing in its effectiveness, accuse it of being a means of domination and of maintenance of social inequalities.
