Grounded on data collected about costs and operation of elementary municipal schools in Rio de Janeiro, the authors show that resources are unequally distributed between different schools, benefitting those attended by students of higher socio-economic level. A discussion is made about existing alternatives for attaining a better level of equity and efficiency in the school system.
