Being masculine under neon light: curriculum and northeasternness

In a Northeast whose power plays with the imaginary, this article turns to the film Boi Neon (2015), directed by Gabriel Mascaro, in an attempt to extend pedagogical reflection, especially on the cur- riculum, to the cinema, highlighting the subjectivizing power of images in the composition with their narratives. Inspired by post-critical theories of the curriculum, especially the philosophy of difference, it is argued that the becoming-woman of Iremar, the protagonist of the film, is transformed into the surreal and spatial movement of a neon-curriculum. The northeast, as a spatial area full of images and representations of masculinity, presents a topography of power, rigid contours that simulate a naturalness in gender relations. We conclude that the neon-curriculum operates a resistance in this geography, putting new trajectories into operation, reconfiguring space-time in hegemonic narra- tives. In this curriculum, colored lines vary representations of northeastern masculinity, transforming processes of subjectivation through new desires.
