VERHINE, Robert. Brazilian graduate education and American influence: a perspective inspired by Anísio Teixeira. Ensaio: aval. pol. públ. educ. [online]. 2026, vol.34, n.131, e0265582.  Epub 25-Maio-2026. ISSN 1809-4465.  https://doi.org/10.1590/s0104-40362026003405582.

The text examines the development of Brazilian graduate Education in light of American influence, using the ideas of Anísio Teixeira as a key reference. It argues that this influence did not occur as a simple transfer of models, but rather through a process of adaptation and hybridization, in which external ideas were reinterpreted according to Brazilian conditions. It highlights the role of Anísio Teixeira and Rui Barbosa as mediators of this influence, as well as different theoretical interpretations, ranging from notions of dependency to those of creative cooperation. The historical analysis emphasizes the transition from the European tutorial model to the American organizational model, consolidated in Brazil in the 1960s through the Sucupira Report and the University Reform. The text also identifies both convergences and divergences between the Brazilian and American systems, particularly regarding the role of the state, program structures, and evaluation processes. Finally, it addresses contemporary challenges, such as professional graduate programs and distance Education, proposing greater institutional flexibility and innovation. It concludes that Brazilian graduate Education is a distinctive national construction, shaped by external influences but carefully adapted to local realities.
