This article  examines the relationship between Anísio Teixeira's thought and that of john Dewey,  based on Michael Lowy's concept of "elective affinity." To this end, the paper  analyzes  this intellectual relation in the following points: a) choice: Anísio Teixeira's intellectual  attraction to Dewey; b) symbiosis: a blending of concepts; c} common ground:  pragmatism and liberalism; d) difference: time and space.
