Literacy scenarios in the North Region after the COVID-19 pandemic

This text aims to understand how literacy teachers in the North of Brazil experienced and evaluate the return to in-person classes after the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenges faced, and the ways to deal with this new reality. To this end, we held a discussion on literacy in a pandemic context based on data from the Alfabetização em Rede (AlfaRede) collective database. This is a quantitative and qualitative study that involved teachers from all over Brazil, who answered a survey with 25 questions and participated in a focus group. In this text, we focused on data from the North region. The data were analyzed using content analysis and demonstrate that, during the return to in-person classes, with regard to literacy teaching, there was a scenario of sanitary, pedagogical, and infrastructural reorganization of basic education schools. They also demonstrate that literacy teachers evaluate the actions taken by institutions in the northern region in preparing for the return to in-person classes as good or very good. Regarding the challenges faced and the possible ways of coping, the ruptures, discontinuities in learning, the need for greater dialogue and teacher formation stand out.
