This article aims to reflect on the challenges and possibilities of rural education and on the relations and contradictions between education and work from a Marxist perspective. The methodological instruments are based on a qualitative method, analyzing dissertations and theses produced from the perspective of Dialectical Historical Materialism and accessed through the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations - BDTD. The works also discuss the origins, work, policies and concepts of rural education. We observed that there are challenges, tensions and problems regarding rural education, which in many cases still expresses an urban-centric education linked to the demands of the capitalist mode of production. It was found that the National Common Curriculum Base itself is aligned with the political-ideological ideology of capitalism and can lead to a precarious education for rural children and young people.
