The pedagogy of hospitality is composed of teaching practices that open themselves to alterity, welcoming the unexpected, the foreign, and that which does not always have a name, an identity, or a face. It is a pedagogy forged in encounters with the childhoods of trans children and, in order to exist, it demands the creation of an open-door curriculum, one capable of welcoming difference without capturing or reducing it. Based on a cartographic exercise that traced the paths of trans children and their families, this paper shows the effects that gender-transitioning childhoods produce on pedagogical and curricular practices. Drawing on the ethics of hospitality as formulated by Jacques Derrida, along with the philosophies of difference, queer studies, and post-critical curriculum perspectives, the argument developed is that, by opening themselves to the welcoming of difference, the families of trans children mobilize and practice a pedagogy of hospitality, composed of lines of farewell, mourning, joy, and rebirth. This pedagogy connects with the school curriculum, calling it to open its doors to the novelty that dissident childhoods announce for education.
